There are a few considerations before deciding to build or buy a pond:
Location: You want to choose a spot that won't get full sun all day (too much encourages algae growth) but not directly under a large deciduous tree thats going to drop leaves in the pond every fall.
Budget: The larger the pond the greater the initial cost and the cost of pumps, chemicals and filters increase proportionately.
Fish: Are you planning to introduce fish to your pond? If so, you will need to commit to feeding them regularly and monitoring the water to ensure it will support them.
Maintenance: No matter how you cut it, ponds require some maintenance. Filters need to be cleaned regularly, water has to be added as it evaporates and ponds need to be prepared for the winter. Some plants need to be brought indoors for the winter and if your pond is less than 3 ft. deep, you will probably have to bring your fish inside as well.
Are the rewards worth the effort? Well, we certainly think so! When we landscaped our yard, we did it without one blade of grass so we wouldnt have to maintain a lawn but we don't regret for one moment the minimal maintenance required for the pond. I guess the best advice I can give on ponds is to buy the biggest filter you can afford: you cant over-filter and it reduces the time between cleanings.

Creating a pond - your backyard "oasis"
When friends saw our pond for the first time, their comment was "it's like having your own little oasis"
and that's about the best description I can think of. The soothing sound of the waterfall and the sight of the fish swimming around take away the stress of the day like nothing else.
Becoming a "ponder" doesn't have to be complicated or expensive - it can be as simple as a small pre-formed deck pond or as elaborate as you want to make it with fountains, waterfalls, streams and fish.
Our first pond consisted of a leftover pond liner and tiny fountain pump. The pond held about 30 gallons and when it got dirty we just pumped out the water and refilled. We enjoyed it so much that last year we decided to enlarge it and install a small waterfall and add fish. This year we added a stream and enlarged the waterfall. There's no such thing as the perfect pond - they're constantly evolving.
